AWARD-WINNING BAR ARRIVES AT THE LANGHAM, HONG KONG

Glamorous sister bar to The Langham, London’s ‘Artesian’ promises Hong Kong’s best bourbon, gin specialties and classic cocktails


(Hong Kong, October, 2014) – The Langham, Hong Kong has brought the award-winning bar concept from the group’s London flagship to Hong Kong.

Artesian at The Langham, London was voted the world’s best cocktail bar for three consecutive years in 2012, 2013, and now 2014 by Drinks International.

The sophisticated bar’s presence in Hong Kong is part of a multi-million dollar facelift at the five-star address in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui.

The new sister Artesian combines nostalgic Art Deco romance with an alluring contemporary style as its extension to Asia on Canton Road.

Taking signature drinks from the Artesian in London, the distinctive creations begin with the Paddington, named after its famous railway station, blending Lillet, grapefruit, lemon, orange marmalade and absinthe.

Meanwhile, the Chelsea Flower Show Cocktail pays homage to the well-known garden show in London by using elderflower liquor giving a floral aroma and taste. With Fino Sherry, Lillet Blanc, cedar wood and bitters added to the concoction, this cocktail is garnished with a delicate pink petal and lavender fig.

Artesian Hong Kong’s signature Classic Cocktails will include bourbon creations and gin specialties created by Bar Manager Rajendra “Rush” Limbu. Having lived in Hong Kong for 17 years, his drink menu incorporates flavours and ingredients reflecting Chinese heritage and culture. Rush can be credited for creating some of the the best drinks in Hong Kong’s most trendy venues including Otto e Mezzo, Il Milione and Ping Pong.

With a collection of 52 different types of bourbons on offer, Rush is able to create his spin on signature favourites, including Dim Sum Old Fashioned, where Michter’s Bourbon and Rye, old-fashioned bitters and cherry syrup are complemented by home-preserved cherries served in a traditional dim sum tray.

Another of Rush’s signature cocktails is The Langham, inspired by the luxury hotel. The drink has a bourbon foundation, incorporated with Benedictine, basil, fresh lemon and bitters, then rounded off with goji berry syrup, used “because of its popularity in Hong Kong for countless health benefits”.

Fans of gin will also be delighted that the Artesian bar carries no less than 34 different varieties, plus seven types of tonic, both sourced from all over the world. These make up the foundation of the bar’s gin and tonic specialties, in which each gin is carefully paired with a specific tonic to best complement the spirit’s flavours.

Sipsmith, a gin sourced from the United Kingdom and considered an old world spirit, is an independent distillery which combines over ten globally sourced botanicals to create their quality spirit. Rush pairs this gin with juniper berries and lemon peel to complement the bold and aromatic taste.

One of the new world gin specialties is the Gin Mare, carrying Mediterranean influences and combines four principal botanicals: basil, thyme, rosemary and the Arbequina olive. The tonic from Spain emphasizes these flavours providing a savoury taste to the palate.

Bar Manager Rush Limbu strongly believes that a cocktail should look as good as it tastes. Therefore, each cocktail is presented in carefully thought-out glassware that was imported from England and Japan, to not only ensure that they are visually exciting, but also to enhance the drinking experience. In order to maintain Artesian tradition, the glassware used in Artesian Hong Kong is the very same that was used in the London Artesian, as it was transferred from the London location to celebrate its opening in Hong Kong.

Focusing on establishing Artesian as Hong Kong’s most unique bourbon and gin-based cocktail bar, Rush says, “there are many similarities between cocktails and art. They are both born from creativity and passion.”
